The Art of Spiritual Bathing

February and Imbolc are quickly approaching and among one of the most prominent themes of this sacred time is purification & renewal. Coming out of the dark of winter it is time to cleanse the energetic body of the things that no longer serve us and are holding us back – but bathing can be made sacred & spiritual anytime of the year, and indeed I believe it should be.

Since ancient times, humans have taken to water for sacred & spiritual reasons. Indeed hot springs, sacred wells and bathhouses have been revered for their curative and in some cases, cursing properties.  We have practiced sacred bathing for eons, baptizing in water, being reborn in water, being cleansed in water, casting wishes into water.  We’ve Built temples and holy sites along the banks of rivers, lakes & at oceans edge, as if it were a bridge that connected us to the Spirit Realm. Every culture all over the world honors and reveres water. After all, it is necessary for life. But we often take it for granted in our modern, western world & have forgotten to take to water to heal, to cleanse, to be reborn.

Science teaches us that water is a conductor. Even in Astrology, Tarot & other forms of divination water is known as receptive. It absorbs everything it comes into contact with-prayers, crystals, herbs, salts- our bathwater will absorb the energies of these and often amplify their properties, turning our bathwater into an elixir our own energetic and physical bodies will absorb (our own bodies are 70% water-we too absorb the energies of the things we come into contact with and the words we say and hear, food for thought).  Water also carries our energies to the Spirit Realm. Sacred wells have been wished on in Ireland for time immemorial – a wish is just a spell without all the trappings, it is intent, and water is the conductor.

The Art of Spiritual Bathing isn’t difficult, and once you incorporate it into your daily routine you will see an immense change in your own personal energy. I try to soak in the tub at least once a week, but even everyday showers can be sacred.

  • Turn off the Lights. I find modern lighting less than magickal. So I don’t use it whether I’m in the shower or tub, bathe by candlelight.
  • Turn on the music. This will depend on what you’re accomplishing, obviously, but in general I enjoy ‘Meditation Radio’ on Pandora or ‘Maneesh de Moor’ for my everyday bathing.
  • Incorporate Salts & Essential Oils. For your sacred showers, mix some essential oils of your choice into about 1/2cup Epsom salt. Throw it into the corner of the shower and as the water dissolves it the aroma of the oil will be released. You can do the same in the Bath. All of our Magickal Perfumes can be used as bath oil as well, and all of our Soaps are made with essential oils & intent.
  • Add in Crystals & Herbs. Depending on your intentions, drop in a corresponding crystal or handful of herbs/plants. You can also try using some of our bath bombs. We create all of them in corresponding moon phase & include luxury ingredients such as shea butter and appropriate essential oils, crystals, herbs and of course, intention.

Sink into your bath and allow the water draw out all of the stress, negativity, sorrow, fear, burdens you may be carrying. Let the water support you. Breath deep & Connect. Feel the energy of your intention envelope and soak into your being. As you relax into your positive intentions, allow guidance, inspiration, ideas, and intuitions to come to you.

May Your Bathing be Sacred & Spiritual, Wild Ones.
